Introduction
Published in 2025, Dire Bound is the first novel in The Wolves of Ruin series, as well as being the debut novel of Sable Sorenson - a pen name for two authors that co-wrote this novel.
A Summary
Dire Bound follows Meryn Cooper, a girl who has grown up resenting the Bonded, the powerful warriors who ride into battle linked to enormous dire wolves. While they enjoy privilege, she fights to keep her family alive. Everything changes when her younger sister is taken across enemy lines, forcing Meryn into a world she never wanted. She joins the army in a desperate attempt to reach the front, only to find herself thrown into the brutal Bonding Trials where survival is never guaranteed. Training at the castle is a constant test, especially because she is seen as a commoner. Her assigned direwolf refuses to acknowledge her, the other recruits are waiting for her to slip, and her instructor seems determined to break her spirit. As Meryn pushes forward, she begins to sense that the castle holds secrets far more dangerous than the Trials themselves.
Writing Style
This novel has a first-person POV, and relatively mid-length chapters, typically ranging from 10-20 pages long. The writing style is extremely descriptive, especially of the surroundings, which paint beautiful, if not gruesome at times, imagery. The pacing is varied throughout the book, speeding up and slowing down at fairly regular intervals, but none of that feels weird when reading.
What I Loved
Dire Bound hooked me right away with how rich and easy the worldbuilding felt. I never hit that moment where I had to stop and reread a paragraph to understand the magic system or the politics. Everything unfolded naturally and the little diagram of the Bonded hierarchy at the back was such a lifesaver. More fantasy books need to adopt that level of reader support. I also loved how the romance took its time. Most of the book follows the MC with a love interest who is clearly not the end game couple, and that choice made the tension so much more fun. It kept things unpredictable and gave the story room to breathe. When Lee’s real identity came out, I genuinely had to put the book down for a second because my jaw actually dropped.
Anassa completely stole the show for me. She is stubborn, sassy and full of personality, and her dynamic with Meryn felt fresh in a genre where animal companions can sometimes blend together. Watching their bond grow was one of my favorite parts of the whole story. The cast as a whole was so easy to picture. Everyone had their own voice and presence, even the twins, which is rare for me in fantasy where I usually lose track of side characters. The hints sprinkled throughout the book were also handled so well. They never felt heavy or obvious, just subtle enough to make me feel clever when I connected the dots, like the silver hair shift or the hallucinations creeping in.
I also just loved Meryn’s character as a whole. She felt real in her stubbornness and her fierce determination, and I loved the fact that she struggled with her femininity in such a raw way. It felt very reminiscent of Katniss in the Hunger Games.
I pre-ordered Fury Bound the moment I finished this because I was so enamored and excited!
What I Didn’t Love
Some of the plot points can be predictable, especially if you read a lot of fantasy books. Personally, I didn’t mind it as the worldbuilding felt so distinct from other books in the genre that I did find myself still feeling surprised at some of the twists that it took.
Does Dire Bound Contain Sex Scenes?
Yes, throughout the novel there are sex scenes dispersed, as well as a whole lot of yearning. I would give it a 2.5% on the spiciness. It’s a nice addition and done very well, but it is not the main focus of the story.
Recommendation
I absolutely recommend it for those that loved Fourth Wing, or those that love the fantasy genre as a whole. It lives up to the hype, and in my opinion, deserves a lot more. Fury Bound will be released on May 5th 2026, so it’s the perfect time to read.
