Introduction
First published in July 2024 by Sarah Beth Durst, The Spellshop is a cozy fantasy for you to read while wrapped in blankets on a rainy day with. Durst has perfected her ability to tell stories that melt your heart, with her loveable characters, found family and romance.
A Summary
Kiela is first and foremost a librarian. That’s why when she has to flee her home and workplace, she takes as many books with her as she can. As she runs away from the war on her doorstep, she finds herself back at the place she swore she would never come back to — her home town.
As she learns to rebuild her life and readjust to all of her nosy neighbors, she finds new hope for this life of hers. Just as she starts to get comfortable, someone washes up on shore that may threaten her freedom, as well as her precious books. She’ll be forced to learn to trust, take risks and be brave, but with her loving community, she might be able to pull it off.
Writing Style
The best way I could describe the writing of this book is warm. It’s filled with heart and a coziness that immerses you. It has one POV and the chapters are very typical of a cozy fantasy novel.
My Thoughts
The Spellshop was a really cute experience to read. It has all of the elements to make it the perfect cozy read, with its adorable side characters, found family and tons of magic. In my opinion, this book leads more towards the coziness than the fantasy aspect, despite the entire novel being about the use of magic. There wasn’t a ton of explanation about the lore, so you definitely do have to accept the information given at face value and just enjoy the journey. However, I don’t necessarily think it’s a big flaw in this book. It fits with the style and makes it calming to read through.
The characters were great, with representation of LGBTQ+ characters and relationships and a wide cast of animal/plant companions to grow attached to. However, they are very one dimensional in the sense that they are either really likable or just horrible people for the sake of it.
I enjoyed the romance a lot in this book. I find that a lot of times romance can overshadow friendships but that wasn’t the case here. Both aspects of Kiela’s journey were well done and wrapped up in an adorable way. I loved Larran and thought he was an adorable love interest.
Ultimately, it is a book about books, which is always going to have a special place in my heart.
