6 Books With Mind-Bending Plot Twists
I am sick of looking for a book that confuses, bewilders and surprises meーonly to be met with the same set of recommendations. Eventually I stopped looking online and just read books in hope they would have that effect on me, and over 2026 I have collected 6 that I felt have met this threshold. Each has shocked me or had surprising plot twists (albeit in very different ways) and I’ve collected them all in hopes you can get some recommendations that feel new and exciting!
A Stage Set for Villains by Shannon J. Spann
Publish Date: 5th February 2026
This is marketed as a dark fantasy romance, but I think calling it that undermines the pure genius of this plot. The majority of the novel takes place in the playhouse - a circus-like structure that can be moved by the players when they want. Riven Hesper is cursed. She remembers the Player that did it, but no matter what she does, she cannot find evidence that the Player exists. She has seen the faces of the 5 remaining Players, and none of them match the one that did this to her. She has spent the last 10 years coated in anger and loneliness. When the Playhouse announces an opportunity for a mortal to become a Player, the world is thrown into chaos. But all Riven sees is a chance to be normal. To be uncursed. She infiltrates the competition, and slowly but surely, she begins to question the reality she is in.
While it brushes against familiar tropes, the story quickly becomes something deeper, stranger, and far more emotional. The plot is tense and unpredictable, tying its threads together perfectly. I finished the book feeling gutted, exhilarated, and a little betrayed in the best way possible.

The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros

I went into this novel thinking it was a simple historical romance novel, but it proved to be so much more. The Things We Leave Unfinished takes place in two timelines that mirror each other and intertwine the generations of family. It blends the horrors of WW2 with a modern era. This is one of those books that you cannot prepare for, you simply need to experience it.

It Should Have Been You by Andrea Mara

Andrea Mara has a unique skill to make everyday problems into thrilling, life-threatening mysteries that leave readers in shock. It Should Have Been You is the best novel I have read from her this year, with its discussions of mental health, murder and the challenges that new mothers face. The twists throughout this book make you feel like you are losing touch with reality, and it all ties together with a perfect knot, leaving you tied in the middle to try to understand what the hell just happened.

The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I didn’t go into this book thinking it would end up on a list of the best plot twists, but alas here we are. This book is so much more than the plot twists it gives, but especially through the series, it consistently provides high level turns that keep the readers on edge while being entertaining in many other ways. The Naturals is the first book in this series which focuses on a group of teenagers that - for various reasons - have developed skills that make them useful to the FBI solving murders. It feels like criminal minds with teenagers and I adore it so much.

Our Infinite Fates by Laura Stevens

If you’re looking for a standalone fantasy that feels simultaneously heartbreaking and light. It uses reincarnation, romance, and identity in a way that’s easy to follow, with short chapters and a structure that moves between present day and past lives. While the story doesn’t always capture the full complexity of a character who’s lived for centuries, it still delivers an engaging, accessible experience. Arden is a standout, and the exploration of gender identity is handled with real care. If you enjoy fantasy with a reincarnation twist, minimal spice, and a fast pace, this is a great pick - especially when you want a self‑contained story you can finish in a day.

I know this has probably been all over your FYP, but there is a reason for it. If you have never read Manacled, the twists and turns in the second/third part of this novel will leave you shell-shocked and reeling for the entire month. At least it did for me. You will be confused for the first few hundred pages, but trust me, it will pay off. This story is full of betrayal, the price of war and torture.
